Taipei ‘welcomes’ Macau Govt setting up office there

January 13, 2010 By: blogmacau.info Category: External Relations

Representative of the Taipei authorities in Macau said that his office will be willing to provide asssitance if the Macau Government wants to set up an office in Taiwan.

Chyan Chuann-Deng (錢釧燈), acting director of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Centre, said that he appreciated the Chief Executive Chui Sai On’s (崔世安) intention to set up such office on the island, but so far no further information was received by the Centre on that matter.

He said that the Centre hoped that Macau Government could at least set up an office that will offer assistance to Macau residents in emergency situations, and his Centre will be willing to offer all necessary assistance.

He said that he ‘fully support’ the attitude of the Macau Government to set up service institutions in Taiwan.

Chyan also pointed out that after Hong Kong setting up trade representative office in Taiwan in 2008, relations between Taiwan and Hong Kong have overtaken those between Taiwan and Macau.

He is confident that communications between Taipei and Macau authorities are smooth, as the Taipei Economic and Cultural Centre ‘can discuss any problems with the Macau Government’ over the past 10 years.

Macau residents in Taiwan currently have to contact the Mainland Affairs Council should they face emergency situations, who will relay the message via the Taipei Economic and Cultural Centre to their families.

There are about 6,000 Macau students studying in Taiwan, while about 25,000 people are holding identity documents issued by the Taipei authorities. Annually, more than 30,000 visitors from Macau travel to Taiwan in recent years.
