Two of the heads of Macau's gaming concessionaires said that the Singapore's Integrated Resort project will not affect Macau.

First quarter GDP growth at 18.8%

May 31, 2006 By: blogmacau.info Category: *Older Posts (before June 2008)*

Macau's GDP growth during the first quarter of this year stands at 18.8%, much better than expected.

Both spending made by visitors and consumers increased during the period at 19.9%, and increases were also recorded in investment projects and exports.

Academics told Jornal Va Kio that the stronger economy than expected is due to the growth in exports, when EU and US markets have restricted the export quota of mainland Chinese products, which made Macau manufacturers to export them via Macau.

However, such boost in exports will only be a short-term phenomenon, and the force to move Macau's economy forward is still the gaming and tourism sectors.

They also told the newspaper that Macau's economy should achieve a healthy and balanced growth, and that the quality of economic development should be pursued.
